1978 Mustang II & King Cobra
The 1978 Mustang II
1978 was the last year for the Mustang II, the Mach 1 model and the Cobra II option package.
In the interior, the most noticable change was the use of two rear seat cushions replacing the previous full-length seat.
Mechanically, the 302 ci V-8 came with either a two-barrel or the Variable Venturi carburetor. The optional power steering was enhanced through the use of variable ratio.
The Cobra II got a new tape stripe treatment, and black rear window louvers, similar to the Sport Slats of 1969-70 Mustangs, were made part of the package. The production total for the Cobra II took a plunge in 1978 to only 8,009 units.
The Fashion Accessory Package, specifically designed to appeal to women, consisted of Fresno cloth seat inserts, a driver’s side illuminated sun visor mirror, a four-way adjustable driver’s seat, coin tray, map pockets for maps and other things, an illuminated entry system and exterior tape stripes.
The optional styled steel wheels were also available in white only. The forged aluminum wheels were also available in white, in addition to natural aluminum.
The most expensive option seen on the Mustang since the Boss 429 engine was the King Cobra option, at $1,277. This was a special cosmetic treatment/equipment package for the SportsRoof. It included a special front air dam, the Cobra II’s hood scoop and rear spoiler, wheels similar to those found on the Pontiac Trans AM, special striping and hood decal, and King Cobra identification. Mechanically, the 302 ci V-8 was standard equipment as was power steering, power brakes, heavy-duty springs, adjustable shocks, rear stabilizer bar and spoke wheels. Total units produced with the King Cobra option was a mere 4318.
